These thoughts are from a friend:
"What Is a Caregiver?
For most of my life I’ve had caregivers. My first caregivers were members of my family. Then people were hired to take care of me. There have been good caregivers and some not so good. Others have been really bad. A person has to want to be a caregiver for it to work out. I’ve learned that from experience. But some of them have really hurt me. They are just looking to get paid and don’t really care about me. I need to be fed, bathed, dressed, taken outside, loved, and I need to get enough exercise. I need a social life inside and outside my house. I used to live in a condo in San Francisco with a live-in caregiver that told me she loved me. But she lied to me. When I moved out, she refused to stay in touch. I was fed well, kept clean, and taken out but not really cared for. Some people love me and care for me and some people just work for a paycheck. They complain about the work. They blame me for my disability. They treat me like I can’t do anything. They don’t feed me well. That makes me depressed. They are jealous of my good caregivers. They don’t want them to take good enough care of me. They just want to look good. I need caregivers in order to live anywhere. People that take care of me need to really care and love me. I think people should have a good heart if they want to care for people with disabilities. Where does that come from?"
